ELICOS – English Language Courses

This English course is designed to help learners to improve their everyday english language proficiency in all four macro-skills, including speaking, listening, reading and writing.

It is anticipated that by enrolling and participating in this course, the learners will:
• use English with greater confidence in social and professional settings
• speak more easily, clearly and confidently
• read a range of texts with greater understanding
• learn to actively participate in social interactions
• use grammar more accurately
• engage with English language speaking people more confidently


  • Total Duration: 1.5 years
  • Each course: 6 months
  • Weekly contact hours: 20 hours
  • Costs for each course (6 months): $5000
  • Delivery: Face-to-face classroom only

These numbers are on per course basis:

Course contact hours – 400 Hours
Face-to-face contact hours per week – 20 Hours
Teaching weeks – 20 weeks
Number of break weeks – Up to 9 weeks, however students will normally break after each level
Expected hours per week of personal study – 5 hours minimum


The program is designed to enable students’ progression from one course to the next enabling them to move from Elementary to Upper Intermediate level.  The progression is shown below.


General English I

There are no specific educational pre-requisites for entry into this course, as entry into this level is based on assessment of English language proficiency.  However, it is anticipated that a majority of our students will have completed Year 10 or equivalent

ISLPR 1 (or equivalent) on entry / (IELTS 3 on entry) for Elementary level entry;

(Note: Students with ISLPR 1+ (or equivalent) or (IELTS 4 on entry) can start midway at Pre-Intermediate level within the General English I course

The General English I (including Elementary – Pre Intermediate levels) curriculum is designed to enhance the English language proficiency of international students and visitors travelling to Australia for the purpose of improving their general English proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

 

The course comprises of two progressive levels starting from Elementary and gradually increasing to Pre-Intermediate.

  • The General English- Elementary level is designed for students who already have basic proficiency in English that enables them to conduct basic transactional conversation and use the language in familiar environments, such as making basic purchases at shops and restaurants and using public transport. The course will enable students in improving their English language skills in both transactional and social situations.
  • The General English- Pre-Intermediate level is designed for students who already have transactional proficiency in English that enables them to conduct simple conversations and use the language in routine work related tasks. The course will enable students in improving their English language skills in both work and social situations.

General English II

There are no specific educational pre-requisites for entry into this course, as entry into this level is based on assessment of English language proficiency.  However, it is anticipated that a majority of our students will have completed Year 10 or equivalent

(Note: Students with ISLPR 2+ (or equivalent) or (IELTS 5 on entry) can start midway at Upper-Intermediate level within the General English II course

The General English II (Intermediate – Upper Intermediate) curriculum is designed to enhance the English language proficiency of international students and visitors travelling to Australia for the purpose of improving their general English proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The course comprises of two progressive levels starting from Intermediate and gradually increasing to Upper-Intermediate.

  • The General English- Intermediate level is designed for students who already have the language proficiency in English that enables them to conduct simple conversations on everyday topics, use the language in routine undemanding work related tasks and participate in everyday commerce. The course will enable students in further improving their English language skills in both work and social situations.

 

  • The General English – Upper Intermediate level is designed for students who already have the language proficiency in English that enables them to conduct detailed conversations on everyday topics, use the language in routine work related tasks and participate actively in everyday commerce. The course will enable students in further improving their English language skills in both work and social situations. The Upper Intermediate English program builds language skills necessary for participation in a wide range of social and vocational activities

Advanced English

There are no specific educational pre-requisites for entry into this course, as entry into this level is based on assessment of English language proficiency.  However, it is anticipated that a majority of our students will have completed Year 10 or equivalent

(Note: Students with ISLPR 3+ (or equivalent) or (IELTS 5.5 on entry) can start midway at IELTS Preparation level within the Advanced English course

The Advanced English (Advanced – IELTS Preparation) curriculum is designed to enhance the English language proficiency of international students and visitors travelling to Australia for the purpose of improving their general English proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The course comprises of two progressive levels starting from Intermediate and gradually increasing to Upper-Intermediate.

  • The Advanced English – Advanced level is designed for students who already have the language proficiency in English that enables them to conduct extended conversations on everyday topics, use the language in familiar and new work related tasks and participate actively in everyday commerce. The course will enable students in further improving their English language skills in both work and social situations. The Advanced English program will enable students to perform effectively in a wide range of informal and formal situations relevant to social and community life and everyday commerce and social activities.
  • The Advanced English – IELTS Preparation level is designed to prepare Intermediate level students for the IELTS Test (Academic & General Training). On completion of this course, students should be able to achieve between 5.5 and 6.5 in the IELTS bands for each skill tested. The course integrates skills practice and language development in 20 x 1 hour lessons in each week of the course. The skills and language areas covered are: Reading (Academic & General)

  • Pronunciation
  • Language (Grammar)
  • Vocabulary

 

Every week, students will receive practice and advise on how to deal with the different sections and parts in each of the four skills that are tested. Students will also become fully versed in all the different components of the tests. In Weeks 5 & 10, they will have the opportunity to experience a full IELTS Test under conditions.

Furthermore, they will be encouraged to develop their knowledge and accurate usage of both simple and complex grammatical forms. They will also be pushed to expand their active vocabulary in common topic areas. This focus on grammar and vocabulary will greatly assist their performance in the Writing and Speaking tests.
